New little libraries for Childers book lovers

Wednesday, 21 August 2019

Residents in Childers will have improved access to books with five free little libraries now in operation thanks to a grant from the Federal Government’s Stronger Communities Program.

Federal Member for Hinkler Keith Pitt congratulated Childers Men’s Shed on its successful application from round 4 of the program.

“Childers Men’s Shed received $3,000 to design, build and install five free little libraries throughout Childers,” Mr Pitt said.

“The Stronger Communities Program has been very successful for community groups and organisations like the Childers Men’s Shed that would otherwise struggle to fund these types of projects.

“More than 50 projects throughout the Hinkler electorate have received funding from the Stronger Communities Program,” he said.

Childers Men’s Shed vice president Tony Elton said the free little libraries were already proving to be popular.

“Free Little Libraries have been shown to spread the love of literacy, cultivate a spirit of generosity and to motivate children to continue reading during school holidays and while travelling,” Mr Elton said.

“It was a great opportunity for the Childers Men’s Shed to work with the Bundaberg Regional Council, Childers Library, Queensland Country Women’s Association and the Childers Neighbourhood Centre to choose the best locations for the free little libraries.”

The free little libraries are located at:

– CWA

– Childers Historical Complex

– IDSS

– Hinkler Street Child and Family Building

– Firehouse Potters on Churchill Street

The Stronger Communities Program offers eligible community groups grants of between $2,500 and $20,000 for small capital projects. All applications need to commit matching funding contributions.

Round 5 of the Stronger Communities Program is open now for Expressions of Interest and closes on Monday, September 9. To download an EOI form visit: https://keithpitt.com.au/guides-publications
