A program that helps young local athletes compete in state and national competitions has had a boost.
Federal Member for Hinkler Keith Pitt said the number of annual grants for the Local Sporting Champions program has increased from 9,000 to 12,000.
âThis is fantastic news for our young local athletes who can often have to travel long distances to compete in their chosen sport in state or national competitions,â he said.
âAnother exciting addition to the Local Sporting Grants program is extra financial support of up to $1,000 for more than 900 para-athletes to take part in competitions.
âWe have had some fantastic Paralympians from this region â Rheed McCracken, Samantha Schmidt and Chris Pitt â and I hope this funding will help other para-athletes realise their goals.â
The Local Sporting Champions program provides financial assistance to coaches, officials, and competitors aged 12 to 18 who are required to travel to participate in state, national or international championships. Age eligibility for the new Local Para Champions program will be those aged 12 to 24.
Applicants receive between $500 and $750 towards the cost of attending championship events which help ease the financial burden on individuals and their families.
Round three of the Local Sporting Champions program closes at 11.59pm (AEDT) on 31 December 2021, and Round 4 opens on 1 January 2022 and closes on 31 March 2022.
