Veil of secrecy must be lifted on Paradise Dam

Saturday, 23 November 2019

The Queensland State Council of the LNP has today condemned the veil of secrecy the Palaszczuk Government has in place over its handling of safety concerns at Paradise Dam.

Federal Member for Hinkler Keith Pitt moved an urgency motion at the state conference – which was passed unanimously – demanding the “veil of secrecy” surrounding the dam be lifted.

“The Queensland State Labor Government announced in September that there was an unspecified safety issue and immediately began releasing thousands of mega litres of water in the middle of one of Australia’s worst droughts,” Mr Pitt said.

“The community has a right to know what the problem is and when it will be fixed but right now the community is in in the dark.

“Currently the dam level is at 44 percent, down from 75 percent, but thousands of mega litres have gone straight out to sea in a complete waste of such a precious resource.

“I congratulate the State opposition which has committed to Bradfield 2.0 and new water infrastructure, meanwhile Labor can’t even keep dams we already have operational.”

Full wording of the motion:

Urgency motion

That this State Council of LNP condemns the Palaszczuk Government for failing to inform those residents, farmers and businesses of the risk to property and life from the Paradise Dam. We demand the veil of secrecy is lifted, transparency is provided and funding for repair and restoration to retain 300,000 mL of capacity of this dam is immediately provided.
