Pitt welcomes inquiry into nuclear power

A Parliamentary committee will investigate if nuclear could be a future power source and industry in Australia.

Federal Member for Hinkler Keith Pitt has welcomed the announcement that the Standing Committee on Environment and Energy will investigate nuclear energy, as directed by Minister Angus Taylor.

“Along with Senator James McGrath, I have been lobbying to have this much needed conversation with the Australian people,” Mr Pitt said.

“Australia is one of the few developed nations which is not using nuclear as an energy source, yet we mine uranium here and send it overseas.

“There have been significant advancements with technology and the committee will look at a range of areas including waste management, health and safety, environmental impacts and economic feasibility.

“It’s not just about looking at whether nuclear could be an affordable reliable power source with virtually no emissions, it could be a new strand to the economy with fabrication, reprocessing, mining and exporting of uranium.

“I congratulate the Prime Minister on having the courage to establish this inquiry and l look forward to seeing the report towards the end of the year.

“I hope that Labor can push pause on its scare campaign and take a bi-partisan approach to this inquiry and get the facts.”
