Financial boost for local athletes

Twenty-three young athletes across the Bundaberg and Hervey Bay region have received a helping hand for competitions held before coronavirus struck.

Federal Member for Hinkler Keith Pitt said due to the large number of sporting events cancelled due to covid-19, a number of applications had the opportunity to be considered for funding again.

“Being selected to represent your state or nation in your sport is a great honour for our local athletes, but there are always costs associated with getting to competitions,” Mr Pitt said.

“The Local Sporting Champions grant program provides between $500–$750 for coaches, officials and competitors aged 12-18 to take part in state, national or international championships.

“Congratulations to the 23 young athletes who have been successful under round 4 of the 2019-20 Local Sporting Champions Grant program.”

Applications for the Local Sporting Champions program are currently suspended due to the growing number of local, national and international sporting events being impacted by the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.
Sport Australia is actively monitoring the status of sporting championships and will reconsider this position as required.

You may still be able to apply for a grant for exceptional circumstances, if you are attending a state, national or international championship that is confirmed to be taking place between 15 May to 30 June 2020.

To be considered for this, please email lsc@sportaus.gov.au to provide the championship details and your contact information.
