Bundaberg flexes its muscles with new Multiplex Sports Complex

Bundaberg residents have celebrated the opening of the new Multiplex Sports Complex, providing patrons and residents with quality recreational and communal facilities at the new centre.

Minister for Regional Development, Territories and Local Government John McVeigh said the new complex includes a sports and civic hall capable of hosting 2,000 people.

“This sports complex will provide a community venue capable of addressing the needs of Bundaberg, including hosting major sporting matches, community events and conferences,” Dr McVeigh said.

“Stage 2 of the project created 117 jobs during construction, and will provide another 29 ongoing positions.”

Federal Member for Hinkler Keith Pitt, who attended the official opening today, said the project also included the construction of two community function rooms, a commercial kitchen and café, as well as dressing rooms and a lobby.

“The Multiplex now has the facilities necessary to attract business conferences, community events and major sporting competitions to the region,” Mr Pitt said.

“Hosting large-scale events in the region will give an economic boost and means more tourists, as well as increased demand for accommodation and increased spending in local restaurants and shops.”

Mayor of Bundaberg Regional Council Jack Dempsey said Stage 2 will help the venue attract major events to the Bundaberg region.

“This will complement the Stage 1 upgrade and transform this facility into the Wide Bay regions premier venue for sporting, community and business events,” Cr Dempsey said.

Stage 2 of the project was jointly funded by the Australian Government contributing $5 million, the Queensland Government $5 million and the Bundaberg Regional Council $2.26 million.
