Netball in Bundaberg has been given a boost with today’s official opening of eight new bitumen courts at the Bundaberg Netball Complex.

Minister for Regional Development, Territories and Local Government John McVeigh said the additional courts would encourage increased local participation in one of Australia’s most popular sports.

“Netball is a highly competitive sport, and these new facilities will promote its growth by accommodating more players and also their supporters, with new paths, seating, shade structures and fencing,” Dr McVeigh said.

“By providing high-quality sports infrastructure, the Australian Government is investing in the future of regional communities.”

Federal Member for Hinkler Keith Pitt said that the opening of the courts fulfils a 2016 federal election commitment.

“This project will provide the netball community of Bundaberg and the surrounding region with safe and modern facilities for all members and players to use,” Mr Pitt said.

“Sports participation improves health and wellbeing and creates social cohesion within the community. We are proud to have invested in this project.”

The Australian Government invested $500,000 in the project, with the Bundaberg Netball Association contributing the remaining $30,852.
